Job Spotlight – William Ganucheau, Autonomous Systems Software Engineer

Tuesday February 27th, 2018 TAGS: ,

The Control Team is the largest team at ASV Global and is continually growing. These people are the brains behind the control system; the hardware and software that makes a boat autonomous. Without them there would be no ‘A’ in ASV.

William attended Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and graduated with a bachelors in Computer Science and a minor in Robotics. His interest in robotics goes back to middle school when he helped build a robotic arm for a Science Olympiad competition. In college, he worked in CMU’s Planetary Robotics Lab on a lunar rover for the Google Lunar XPrize competition. While there, he was the software lead for three iterations of the rover and worked on everything from user interfaces to electronics. William’s passion for robotics, software, and building systems for the real world made ASV a perfect fit…

What does your role involve?

I spend most of my time writing software for our boats. In addition to writing code, you’ll often find me in front of a whiteboard trying to work out a problem, talking to my teammates to try to figure out the best way to do something, or reviewing code written by other developers at ASV. Currently, I’m working on improving our vessel’s autonomous navigation capabilities which is a lot of fun.

What is your favorite thing about working for ASV Global?

Getting to work on such a variety of challenging robotics problems and at the end seeing it. I really appreciate that I get to work on challenging problems that align with my interests. I never feel like I’m doing busy work or grunt work; every day I get to come in and solve legitimately challenging problems that I find fascinating. I also like that I get to work with a group of really smart people that share my passion for robotics.

What is your greatest achievement at ASV Global?

The first time we tested my improvements to the navigation system on a real boat, it was really exciting seeing it actually work. Knowing that code I wrote was driving a real boat in the real world was super satisfying.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

When I’m at home, I typically spend my free time watching Netflix or playing video games. I’m a bit of a foodie, too, so I also love trying out all the great restaurants around Lafayette.

We’re currently looking for Software Engineers of all experience levels, including graduates, to join our growing control team in Lafayette, Louisiana. Find out more here.
