The Field Support team is a newer team at ASV Global, born out of the growing need to send engineers and software developers out to deployment and operation sites. These people are the interface between the Operations, Engineering, and Control teams. When it comes to commissioning or debugging a vessel and its subsystems, they are the engineers on-site working with the software, electrical, and mechanical systems to get the boats operational. Their job entails travel to locations all around the world in order to support the deployment and successful operation of ASV Global’s fleet of autonomous boats.
Matthew attended the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (ULL) and achieved his bachelors in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Math. He became interested in robotic systems early in his university curriculum and began participating in extracurricular research to gain skills and experience to further pursue this interest. In college, Matthew competed in the AUVSI competition RobotX in 2016 which gave him real-world experience building, programming, and testing autonomous robots from scratch. Here he tells us how this led him into industry…
What does your role involve?
I support our Operations team as the on-site engineer during deployments, testing, and customer-based operations. This involves travelling all over the world as needed, including going offshore. When not out of the office, I assist with integrating and commissioning vessels in the shop, as well as develop documentation for internal and external use in operating or debugging our systems.
What is your favorite thing about working for ASV Global?
I get a lot of satisfaction out of the challenge in developing autonomous systems, especially maritime systems. The maritime environment yields many challenges for autonomous systems, while also providing a great amount of applications for our vessels. As a Field Support Engineer specifically, I love the opportunity to work with all of the vessels’ systems whether it be software, electrical, or mechanical.
Culture-wise, everyone is really on the same team here which provides excellent team dynamics. Since my first day working here my colleagues have provided a welcoming environment, and we all strive to teach each-other new things to maintain a well-rounded team.
What is your greatest achievement at ASV Global?
Every time we get a vessel out on an operation, it is a victory in my book. Each successful operation of our autonomous systems is a footstep in the direction of evolving our industry to provide more efficient, safe, and affordable methods of operation for any maritime industry.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
Rock climbing, cycling, motocross, hiking, exploring the outdoors, and enjoying the local Cajun cuisine.
