Job Spotlight – Howard Tripp, Autonomous Systems R&D Lead

Friday November 11th, 2016 TAGS:

The Control Team is the largest team at ASV Global and is continually growing. These people are the brains behind the control system; the hardware and software that makes a boat autonomous. Without them there would be no ‘A’ in ASV.

After completing a degree in Computer Science and then an MSc and PhD in Satellite Autonomy, Howard Tripp joined ASV Global as an Autonomous Systems R&D Lead. From developing coding algorithms to taking part in a NATO exercise, Howard explains what makes his job truly out of the ordinary…

What does your role involve?

Everything from generating high level blue sky research concepts to coding, implementing and testing algorithms out on the water.

What is your favourite thing about working for ASV Global?

The practical nature of the work. There are not many software engineering jobs that allow you to code one day and then test on real autonomous vehicles the next.

What is your greatest achievement at ASV Global?

Autonomously controlling high speed USVs in a real NATO warship exercise to provide them with capability they don’t currently have.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I have studied tai chi for 17 years and teach my own classes. I also enjoy sailing and cricket.

We’re currently looking for Software Engineers of all experience levels, including graduates, to join our growing control team at Portchester, UK. Find out more here.
