Summary: ASV Global trialled C-Cat 3 for coastal survey as part of construction support for the new breakwater in Aberdeen Harbour with a Norbit multibeam integrated.
Benefit: Able to obtain a wider dataset due to being able to survey in areas where a manned vessel cannot reach. Reduced cost of operation.
ASV Global was tasked to carry out a construction support survey ahead of a new breakwater being installed as part of the Nigg Bay harbour extension.
Before mobilisation, the Norbit – iWBMS Turnkey Multibeam Sonar System was integrated onto the C-Cat 3 autonomous surface vehicle at ASV Global’s UK headquarters in Portsmouth.
C-Cat 3 has been developed to complement the existing ocean-going ASV Global vehicles for survey and support tasks where a smaller vehicle is better suited to missions. The design incorporates a large payload bay to enable flexibility of payloads used and the fitting of a range of scientific above and below water payloads.
The shallow draft and small size of the vehicle enables deployment in littoral areas.
The C-Cat 3 was transported to Aberdeen Harbour by road trailer to complete the survey.
C-Cat 3 is designed for easy launch and recovery. The vehicle’s modular design allows it to be assembled and disassembled with ease for simple transportation and rebuild. The vessel’s road trailer facilitates a slipway launch, though for this trial C-Cat 3 was crane lifted into the water.
C-Cat 3 was operated using ASV’s ASView software in an ‘unmanned but monitored’ mode and via direct remote control. In this mode the vessel was kept within visual range at all times while running pre-programmed survey lines.
A real-time on-board camera feed was also monitored for obstacle avoidance during the survey. The vehicle used WiFi communications with a backup UHF link for control and data communications.
The C-Cat 3 completed the survey in one day. Use of the C-Cat 3 enabled the end user to obtain data from areas otherwise difficult to access using a conventional manned survey vessel.
C-Cat 3 proved to be able to produce high quality data due to high accuracy line keeping and also minimises health and safety issues associated with this kind of survey.
