ASV goes round the Island!

Wednesday July 20th, 2016 TAGS: ,

On Tuesday 19th July C-Worker 5 became the first autonomous boat to go all the way around the Isle of Wight. The trip took a total of 10 hours, at an average speed of 6 knots.

The journey began early morning from Portchester Harbour where C-Worker 5 was launched from Trafalgar Wharf. ASV Global’s support vessel ‘Blue Thunder’ towed the unmanned vehicle through Portsmouth Harbour until it was released out into the Solent.

The autonomous journey began from Stokes Bay and proceeded in a clockwise direction past the Solent Forts and Bembridge, reaching St Catherine’s Point shortly after midday.

C-Worker 5 continued round past the Needles, through Hurst Straight and towards Cowes before finishing its journey back in Stokes Bay at 6pm.

Throughout the mission, C-Worker 5 was being controlled from Blue Thunder via a COFDM IP radio link using ASV Global’s control system, ASView™. The route was plotted using navigational charts built into the control system’s user interface.

ASV Global launched the C-Worker 5 Autonomous Surface Vehicles (ASVs) in March 2016. The fleet of four vehicles are part of the company’s lease pool and were designed specifically to carry out seabed surveys. One of the C-Worker 5 vehicles is already being used in the Bering Sea in Alaska, collecting data to update navigational charts.

The company headquarters is in Portchester, Hampshire. The team includes a variety of naval architects, design and mechanical engineers, electrical and electronic engineers, marine electricians, electrical wireman, coded TIG and MIG welders, boat fitters, engine specialists, GRP fabricators, vehicle operators, software developers, systems engineers, project managers, sales and marketing managers.

ASV Global is a world leader in autonomous marine technology. The company designs, builds and operates ASVs on a global basis.
