An Internship Out Of The Ordinary

The autonomous revolution is happening and we are always on the lookout for highly motivated, smart team players that love a challenge. This summer, Southampton University student Brian Formento joined our Electrical Design Team as an intern. Brian is currently studying a 4 year MEng Electronic Engineering with Artificial Intelligence course that focuses on the design and implementation of state-of-the-art artificial intelligence techniques. Aside from his studies, Brian runs the start-up incubator Venturespawn and is a board member on the third biggest business and entrepreneurial society in the UK, Fish on Toast.

Despite his short time with ASV, Brian was able to achieve a great deal, including:

  • Completing a re-haul of the central electrical distribution system of the C-Target 9, by replacing a mechanical setup with an electronic interface.
  • Reducing material costs by £450 by designing a bespoke PCB to replace some COTS components, reducing manufacturing time by more than half and consequently further reducing labour costs by £1000 per item.
  • Designing high frequency solid-state switching to replace control mechanisms.
  • Producing in detail test procedures for numerous control containers, increasing consistency, efficiency and quality.
  • Forming links between ASV and SotonHack, the biggest hackathon organization in Southampton.

Brian said: ‘The best part of working at ASV is the independence, coffee and seeing and working on projects that are only found in science fiction’.
